UAE: Where Ancient Sands Meet Modern Skies

UAE: Where Ancient Sands Meet Modern Skies

Habibi, welcome to my next blog, the UAE. UAE was always on my radar as it is one of the most visited tourist locations in recent times. This blog will take you through the venues I visited across the country in 7 days.

The UAE is a federation of seven emirates, each with its own distinct character. Dubai, the undisputed crown jewel, boasts the iconic Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, and the man-made Palm Jumeirah island. Abu Dhabi, the capital, is a treasure trove of cultural experiences, with the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, an architectural marvel, and the world-renowned Louvre Abu Dhabi.

But the UAE is more than just its glamorous metropolises. One can venture beyond the cityscapes and discover the untouched beauty of the desert, explore the golden dunes on a thrilling 4x4 adventure, or embark on a traditional desert safari with stargazing under a canopy of a million twinkling stars.

For centuries, the UAE was a center of trade, with Bedouin tribes traversing the vast desert sands on camelback. Today, alongside these timeless traditions, futuristic skyscrapers pierce the azure sky, and luxurious resorts line pristine coastlines.

The best time to visit the UAE is between October and April, when the weather is pleasant. Accommodation options range from luxurious five-star hotels to budget-friendly guesthouses. Be sure to factor in cultural norms when packing, as the UAE is a Muslim country.

So, whether you crave the thrill of the desert or the indulgence of a luxurious getaway, the UAE offers an unforgettable adventure. This land of captivating contrasts awaits you - a place where ancient traditions embrace the future, and where every corner promises a unique discovery.

Day 1: Arrival in Dubai

We arrived late night at Dubai and our hotel was in Abu Dhabi. After a travel time of 90 minutes, we reached Abu Dhabi, checked in to our rooms for a cosy sleep.

Day 2: Abu Dhabi tour and Ferrari World

Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, is a city that seamlessly blends tradition and modernity. It is rather a new city and hence is very well planned with wide roads and clear bifurcation of residential and commercial areas. The day started with a city tour of Abu Dhabi. A captivating city tour introduced us to its architectural marvels, rich cultural heritage, and stunning natural beauty. We started with a scenic drive along the Corniche Road, a waterfront promenade lined with pristine beaches, high-end hotels, and world-class restaurants. There are places to relax on the sandy beach, enjoy a variety of water sports, or take in the breathtaking views of the cityscape.

The next stop was the Heritage Village. The place makes you step back in time, a living museum that showcases the traditional way of life in the UAE. We explored mudbrick houses, browsed handicraft shops, and witnessed Emirati artisans practising their crafts.

From the Heritage Village, we drove along the grand Emirates Palace, a five-star hotel known for its opulent design and Arabian hospitality. We marvelled at its gold leaf interiors, manicured gardens, and stunning views of the Arabian Gulf. Beside this, is the Royal palace of the King of Abu Dhabi.

Undoubtedly the star attraction of Abu Dhabi, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the largest mosques in the world. This architectural masterpiece features white marble facades, intricate floral mosaics, and towering domes. One has to walk a long way to reach the mosque. Buggy carts are available to save your legs so one can utilise these carts.

The last stop on this day and the major attraction especially for us was the Ferrari World. The Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is an iconic theme park that celebrates all things Ferrari. Nestled on Yas Island, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi holds the title of the world's largest indoor amusement park. As we stepped inside, we were transported into a wonderland dedicated to the legendary Italian marque. From the sleek design elements to the exhilarating rides, every detail here reflects Ferrari's passion for speed and innovation. While Ferrari World caters to thrill-seekers, it doesn't neglect families with younger children. The little ones can unleash their inner Scuderia Ferrari drivers on the smaller driving schools designed specifically for them. Ferrari World offers more than just exhilarating rides. We explored interactive exhibits that showcase Ferrari's rich history and technological advancements. The park is open year round and is a place to visit in Abu Dhabi. After a long day, we returned to our hotel for a well-deserved rest.

Day 3: BAPS Hindu Mandir and Warner Bros World

Our day 3 started with a visit to the BAPS Hindu Mandir. This is a magnificent structure and is the first traditional Hindu stone mandir to be built in Abu Dhabi, marking a significant milestone for religious tolerance and cultural exchange in the region. Drawing inspiration from ancient Hindu temple architecture, the mandir is a masterpiece of intricate carvings, pink sandstone exteriors, and white marble interiors. Features like the seven spires symbolising the seven Emirates and the 402 pillars add to its grandeur. The mandir serves as a bridge between cultures, promoting interfaith dialogue and understanding. Whether you're a Hindu devotee or simply someone interested in exploring different cultures, the BAPS Hindu Mandir is a must-see on your visit to Abu Dhabi.

The next stop was my most anticipated spot in the trip - Warner Bros World, Abu Dhabi. This one-of-a-kind theme park, the world's largest indoor theme park at that, brings iconic Warner Bros. franchises to life. Six distinct zones – Metropolis, Gotham City, Cartoon Junction, Dynamite Gulch, Bedrock, and Warner Bros. Plaza – each meticulously themed and transported us to the heart of our favorite movies and cartoons. We could also meet and greet iconic Looney Tunes characters like Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck and Scooby-Doo and the Mystery Inc. gang. The theme park was definitely the highlight of the tour and is a must visit place here. The park again is a perfect year-round destination, allowing you to enjoy thrilling rides and character interactions in complete comfort.

We checked out from our hotel in Abu Dhabi and moved to our next part of the trip to Dubai. The distance to Dubai is around 150kms. By afternoon, we reached Dubai and our first stop here was the Dubai Miracle Garden. The Dubai Miracle Garden is a truly awe-inspiring sight. Every year, the garden features a new theme, with skilled horticulturists meticulously crafting floral masterpieces that leave visitors speechless. We walked through giant floral arches, hearts, and even a replica of an Airbus A380 airplane, all entirely made of flowers. Just make sure to wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on uneven surfaces. And don’t forget to bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. This iconic structure isn't just visually striking; it serves a symbolic purpose, framing breathtaking views of Dubai's contrasting landscapes. The Dubai Frame boasts the record for the largest frame in the world. Its unique design resembles a giant picture frame, with panoramic views on either side. As you stand on the top deck, you'll be treated to a stunning juxtaposition. The Dubai Frame isn't just about the breathtaking views; it offers a multi-sensory experience. We still had some time in the evening and we decided to give a visit to the Gold Souk. The place is more than just a marketplace – it's a dazzling labyrinth of tradition, vibrant energy, and the glint of a million dreams. Over 380 retailers line the narrow alleys of the Gold Souk, each one vying for your attention with glittering displays. From delicate 24-karat gold chains to intricately designed bangles and statement necklaces, you'll find a dazzling array of designs to suit every taste and budget. You might also find vendors selling exquisite pashminas, ornate Arabic lamps, spices and traditional perfumes, offering a chance to experience the wider charm of the souk. However, beware of fake jewels as there may be many scamsters here. While some shops might accept international currencies, it's always best to carry Dirhams (AED) for better exchange rates and easier transactions. Another long day ended with a good rest.

Day 5: Dubai City Tour, MOTF, Burj Khalifa

This was the day to explore Dubai city. Dubai, the crown jewel of the United Arab Emirates, is a city that seamlessly blends tradition and modernity. A captivating city tour introduced us to its architectural marvels, rich cultural heritage, and stunning natural beauty. The first stop on the tour was the Jumeirah Mosque. This is the biggest mosque in Dubai and is known for its architectural marvel. Next stop was the Jumeirah beach. This is the best public beach in Dubai and is open 24 hours. Stunning views of Dubai skyline on one side and the view of the hotel Burj Al Arab always fills the eyes. The Burj Al Arab is a 7-star, luxurious hotel shaped like a sail. It is the only 7-star hotel in the world. From here, we entered the Palm Jumeirah. This is a man-made archipelago known for its luxurious resorts and stunning views, made in the shape of a palm tree. We passed through the Atlantis hotel and entered the Dubai Marina.

Dubai Marina is a glittering district in Dubai, known for its luxurious waterfront lifestyle. This is a new town carved from a man-made marina, a 3-km stretch of sheltered water. This luxurious haven is a playground for the rich and famous, with an impressive display of yachts and leisure boats vying for attention. Dubai Marina Walk, a pedestrian promenade that stretches along the waterfront, is a vibrant hub of activity. We strolled leisurely along the palm-lined walkway, taking in the stunning views of the marina and the cityscape. For the adventurous soul, Dubai Marina offers a plethora of activities. You can embark on a thrilling jet ski ride, soar above the city in a seaplane, or test your skills with a skydiving experience over the Palm Jumeirah.

We continued our tour with our next stop at the Museum of the Future. This place is more than just a museum; it's a portal to a world brimming with innovation, futuristic ideas, and the potential to shape a better tomorrow. This architectural marvel, resembling a giant torus clad in steel and glass, isn't just visually striking; it houses interactive exhibits and experiences that will ignite your imagination and challenge your perception of the future. Unlike traditional museums that focus on the past, the Museum of the Future takes you on a captivating journey through possible futures. Each floor focuses on a specific theme, such as space exploration, robotics, artificial intelligence, and climate change. Interactive displays and hands-on experiences bring these themes to life, allowing you to explore the possibilities and potential challenges of the future. The museum showcases the latest advancements in various fields, from robotics and AI to biotechnology and sustainability solutions.

The day continued as we reached our last stop of the day at the Dubai Mall. This was another anticipated stop because this was the gateway to Burj Khalifa. But before that, we had some time for shopping. We strolled around the mall gazing at the luxury shops and the huge aquarium. At the other end of the mall is the Dubai fountain. There is a fountain show at every half an hour intervals. Unfortunately, due to Ramadan season, the show was delayed and we could not view this spectacle. However, we were still excited as we could now visit the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa. We started to ascend to the dizzying heights of the world's tallest building and witness breathtaking panoramic views of Dubai at the iconic At the Top, Burj Khalifa observation deck. This awe-inspiring experience promises to leave you speechless, offering unparalleled vistas and a glimpse into the heart of this dynamic city. The journey begins at the ground floor of the Burj Khalifa, where high-speed elevators propel you upwards at an astonishing 10 metres per second. The rapid ascent itself is an exhilarating experience, offering a taste of the engineering marvel that is the Burj Khalifa. At the Top offers not one, but two observation decks, each catering to a different kind of experience: level 124 - world's highest outdoor observation deck and level 125 - luxurious ambiance with floor-to-ceiling windows for uninterrupted views. However, caution to be taken as evening slots are usually crowded and there may be mis-management in the elevators. It may take time to ascend and descend due to this rush. Be prepared for such anomalies. There are cafes at the top offering coffee, snacks and water. This was another long and tiring day and we needed a long rest to refresh.

Day 6: Dolphinarium and Desert Safari

After a long rest, we woke up on the penultimate day of our trip. It started with a visit to the Dubai dolphinarium. We watched the dolphin and seal show, the first of its kind in the UAE. The 45-minute show was funny as well as riveting. We thoroughly enjoyed the show. There are other attractions here such as Bird park, mirror maze.

We had some time before our next activity so we moved to Meena Bazaar for some shopping. This is the place to shop for spices. Gold, souvenirs, chocolates, electronics etc. We did some shopping and got ready for the last activity of the trip, the desert safari. Dubai's desert safaris offer a thrilling and unforgettable adventure, whisking you away from the city's glitz and glamour into the heart of the Arabian Desert. We started with dune bashing as our experienced driver navigated the towering red sand dunes in a 4x4 vehicle. This exhilarating ride had our heart pumping with adrenaline as we experienced the thrill of climbing, traversing, and descending the dunes. We also clicked photos with falcons, the national bird of UAE. There were other activities like camel ride, ATV ride, and sandboarding. We then shifted to a traditional Bedouin camp. We relaxed on comfortable tables indulging in delicious Arabic cuisine served under the starlit sky, and enjoyed traditional entertainment like Tanoura dancing, henna painting and fire show. The dinner was arranged here and it was delicious. The drive to the desert is about an hour. We reached back to our hotel and started packing for our departure the next day.

Day 7: Departure

After wonderful memories and amazing activities, it was time for our departure. Dubai will be fondly remembered as one of the best trips ever. Although the UAE is usually hot, we were welcomed with lovely weather not crossing 24 degrees and this was the best part of the trip. There are some other attractions which we did not indulge in like the Dhow cruise, skydiving, Global village etc. Do visit the UAE whenever possible as it caters to all age groups. Until next time, sayonara!!

Some notes to be taken care of

  1. UAE is usually hot so do not forget sunglasses, hat, sunscreen and comfortable shoes.

  2. Food and water are expensive. There are a lot of supermarkets available. It is recommended to buy water bottles here as it is cheaper.

  3. Purchasing tickets online is recommended as there may be huge queues

  4. Entering any place in Dubai will take some time due to long queues. Be prepared with snacks and water if you are travelling with kids and senior citizens

  5. Burj Khalifa has a slotted entry. You will not be allowed at any other time other than the slot provided to you. And again be ready to encounter long queues here.

  6. Best time to visit is between October and April when weather is pleasant.

  7. Beware of fake products especially while purchasing gold and spices.

  8. Visa has to be applied beforehand for Indian tourists.

  9. Hotels ask for Tourism Dirhams and this is mandatory.

  10. Currency is available in India. However, it can also be exchanged in Dubai at multiple places.
